Water-repellent Azuma bag "AZUMA"
Water-repellent Japanese modern bag "AZUMA"
Azuma means East in Japanese. Azuma (East) refers to Edo (Tokyo) as seen from Kyoto in the Edo period. Japan has long had a culture of wrapping, as is still known as the furoshiki culture. With the penetration of Western culture, common people who admired and tried to imitate Western bags sewed furoshiki and tenugui (hand towels) together to use as bags. This is said to be the beginning of the Azuma bag. When this convenient bag traveled to Kyoto, it became known as the Azuma bag filled with the wisdom of the Azuma people (people of Edo).
